TL;DR: After five whirlwind legs, 25 destinations, 23,953 miles flown, 59h 55m in the air, and $3791.67 spent, I earned 25 years of Mosaic status and 350,000 points. It only took five days of near-constant flying, a mountain of spreadsheets, and more lounge food than I care to admit. The journey was chaotic, hilarious, and occasionally stressful, but worth every second.
When I first booked the JetBlue 25 for 25 challenge, I honestly wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into. 5 legs, 25 destinations and the promise of lifetime memories. Plus a pretty hefty pile of Mosaic status and points. What I didn’t realize at the time was just how much this adventure would test my planning, patience, and sense of humor.
American Airlines, my toxic ex, deserves a little space here. They upgraded me three separate times while I was chasing this JetBlue challenge, like they knew I was moving on and wanted to lure me back. But when I didn’t return the favor, they got the last word by canceling my final flight home from Atlanta. It was the perfect breakup. Dramatic, inconvenient, and a little bit funny in hindsight.
Highlights From the Journey
- Leg 1: I got off to a strong start with nine destinations in four days. The travel went smoothly until I misread the clock and missed a cheap HVN>IAD flight. That mistake cost me a last-minute JFK>DCA ticket, and I started learning early on that spreadsheets only go so far if you forget how to tell time.
- Leg 2: Orlando marked Milestone 15, the halfway point, which gave me my first sense that this was really happening. Richmond added some unexpected flavor to this leg while I wandered through the state house area and even grabbed a meal on a rooftop deck at Cava. A reminder that even in the middle of a mileage run, it’s worth stepping outside the airport loop.
- Leg 3: Providence nearly tripped me up when I boarded the right bus in the wrong direction, but Amtrak came through in the most Amtrak way possible: with a delay. That late train was the only reason I made my connection. Milestone 20 came in Philadelphia, proof that I was closing in fast.
- Leg 4: Portland, Maine was an “on and off the same plane” hop, and I wasn’t alone. The cabin was full of challengers doing the exact same thing. By then I was in the groove of security exits, train rides, lounge meals, and re-entries, but even the monotony had its comedy.
- Leg 5: The grand finale started with another upgrade from American, then took me to Martha’s Vineyard where nearly everyone on the plane was also doing the challenge. We all laughed, compared notes, and traded itineraries as if we were part of a secret club. I set up my laptop on a picnic bench, took a break on a swingset, and then headed south. Atlanta was my 25th destination. Everything was perfect until my final flight home was canceled. What could have been a disaster turned into the best ending possible when I was rebooked on a Delta flight that got me home even earlier than planned.
The Big Payoff
Five days after finishing, my 25 years of Mosaic status and 350,000 points finally showed up. The wait was more nerve-wracking than the flying. Other challengers had theirs posted within a day or two, so I spent nearly a week second-guessing every step, wondering if I had messed it up. But when the email came through, the relief was almost as sweet as the status itself.
Thank you to everyone who followed along on this journey. It was exhausting, ridiculous, and unforgettable. I do not know what the next travel challenge will be, but I know two things: I will bring a spreadsheet, and I will never travel again without lounge access.
